Isaiah’s prophecy promises a Messiah that will be known by a fourfold designation that describes his prominent place in the lives of humans. God has promised us a Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, an Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. Wil the Advent Promise presented to us in the Messiah invigorate our lives this Christmas season and the New Year?

If the Messiah has seized control of our hearts, what will our lives look like? On this fourth Sunday of Advent, we consider the overarching attributes of a Messiah who came to reverse the misfortunes of His people. In the realm of the Messiah’s security, what message will our mouths and lives proclaim?

What place does the Messiah have in your life? Is the Messiah a guest at the table of your heart or is the Messiah the guest of honor? The prophets of Old announced the arrival of a Messiah who would take delight in his people and rejoice over them. How will we allow the Messiah to enliven, enrich and energize us?

The Messiah’s primary role will be to serve. This function is not indicative of what we expect from a king or ruler. Nonetheless, the God of heaven provided for humanity a Messiah who would serve the world. His service would have deep impact on the lives of every human who walks this earth. How can the Messiah serve you?

The Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) is filled with a collection of oracles, revelations, and predications about a future ruler. This ruler possesses attributes not necessarily indicative of an esteemed and powerful king. Yet, while not possessing these ideal traits, this ruler will represent a cosmic shift in the world and in the lives of individuals. Will we receive this prophesied ruler to be our righteousness?
