After spending several weeks exploring the declarations Jesus made of himself in the “I AM” statements, we will spend the next several weeks exploring statements that we can make of ourselves because we are Jesus’ disciples. We will consider how living fully into our identity will bless God, bless us and bless others.

The first words written about God in the Holy Scriptures are words that describe God as creator. Humans stand as the highlight of God’s creation. God has continue to walk with humans and has committed to continually working on and working with humans to shaped them into the likeness of God. When we declare that “We are clay, we make a statement of surrender and permission for God to do his work on us. It may make us uncomfortable at times, but God is a master worker and we can be sure that He knows what he is doing.

While speaking with his disciples, Jesus describes the life his disciples would live in this present world. It would not be a world absent of trouble, struggles, disappointment or persecution. Yet, in the midst of the negative aspects of life on earth, Jesus calls for his disciples to be “standouts”. The characteristics of these standouts will prove to be effective and impactful in turning the world to God.
