Admittedly, it has been difficult for the past two months as we deal with the global Coronavirus pandemic. For the past two months, we have had to search for what it means to be connected. While we search, many have pressed on to complete milestones in their lives, including our class of 2020 graduates. In this sermon, we will explore what it means to be the branches on Jesus’ vine, for Jesus said, “I Am the Vine.” We will also honor our graduates with an inspiring message of support.

While Jesus is discussing his impending departure with his disciples, one of them speaks up and expresses their concern. His close companions are grappling with the prospect of not being with their Lord and master. Jesus explains and describes the disciple’s destiny and destination. It is rooted in the mission of God. Do you know where you are going? If not, Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”.

In one of the most heart touching stories, Jesus encounters some of his best friends in a time of mourning and deep despair. It was within the context of death, that Jesus made a declaration of himself that would have life giving implications for the rest of time. What has died in in your life? What is in need of resurrecting? Jesus says, “I Am the Resurrection and the Life”.

“Follow me!” Jesus makes this request to all who would hear him. With this request, Jesus offers to lead our hearts, our souls, and our minds. He is offering to care for us deeply, responsibly and holistically. As a shepherd tenderly cares for his flock, so does Jesus lead his followers to holy destinations. He says of himself, “I Am The good shepherd and I am the gate”.

The biblical story is replete with the use of “light” as a metaphor for life, salvation, clarity, and understanding. Jesus followers have been called to be “children of the light”. Becoming children of light means believing in the one the father sent, who said of himself, “I am the light of the world.”

The bread of life. With all that we know about the physical and spiritual significance, Jesus makes a statement that should touch the heart, speak to the soul and encourage the spirit. What needs do you have? How can the bread of life give you nourishment that will satisfy your deepest longings?

In the boldest of claims, Jesus makes an assertion that invokes the covenant name of God. In this inaugural sermon, we will explore the power of Gods name and the covenant he so desires to have with his people. In Jesus, God’s covenant is personified and demonstrated.
