Wednesday of the Second Week in Lent

  • Efficiency. It plays a bigger part in my life than I wish it did. This doesn’t mean I’m efficient, but that I feel a shortcoming when I’m not. A spiritually healthy life requires that we recognize when to set efficiency aside. Philippians 4:4-9 reminds us of times to slow down. Rejoicing shouldn’t be done quickly - do it always. Gentleness can’t be hurried. Have you ever received a “thanks a lot” thrown over a shoulder as someone walks away. It means so little in comparison to a hug or a “Thank you” with eye contact.

    Christians can experience God’s peace anywhere we go, but we won’t notice it without slowing down. Finally, a list of things to think upon. We’re told to think about what we think about. Think about that… over some coffee… with a journal… talking with your spouse… talking with your God. Are you aware of your thoughts? Or do you just keep moving and dealing with whatever’s in front of you. Our relationship with God can’t be hurried. God’s not really into efficiency. He’s into you. Think about that.

    Final Exhortations

    Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
